Windows Phones Marketplace Surpasses 50,000 Apps

According to a recent report released by All About Windows Phone, Windows’ match for the Apple App Store and the Android Market, the Windows Phones Marketplace, has passed the 50,000 mark and now offers over half a million downloadable applications. This is nothing compared to the totals of its major competitors; the App Store has reached over 500,000, whilst the Android Market boasts more than 400,000. Yet considering that Microsoft’s store is the youngest of the three, achieving this number is a significant milestone, especially because of the amount of time it took to get there. Whilst Apple took 12 months to bring their total up to 50,000, and Android 19, Windows Phone has done it in a solid 14.

AAWP added that it is not necessarily the 50,000 mark itself that is most important, but the accelerated rate at which the Windows Phones Marketplace achieved it and the continuing growth of the service. At the time of the report, content was being added to the Marketplace at the rate of 265 items each day. The 50,000+ apps currently in place come from over 13,000 different publishers. Although the first 40,000 took Windows over a year to build up, the last 10,000 were added in the space of just 40 days. This achievement is a good start to 2012 for Windows smartphones, if Microsoft really hopes to compete with its powerful rivals.

Microsoft have managed to attract more subscribers to their Windows Phones in the past couple of months, possibly due to the fact that Nokia has now launched the first of its Windows Phone devices, the Lumia range. Other phones running on the Windows Phone operating system include the HTC Titan and the Samsung Focus. Updates to the OS are expected throughout 2012, Tango in the first half of the year and Apollo (or Windows 8) in the latter. Stay tuned to the Dialaphone website to find out how the Windows Phone compares with the iPhone and Android phones in 2012.
